He brought a fresh breath and approach to the jazz our ears were accustomed to, seasoning it with Armenian melodies. With his performances, Mikael Voskanian will add a unique touch to the Sevan Music Festival 2016. On this occasion, we tried to get to know him through a brief interview:<\/p><hr data-start=\"412\" data-end=\"415\" \/><p data-start=\"417\" data-end=\"489\"><strong>&#8212; How did you first decide to play the tar, and why this instrument?<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"491\" data-end=\"826\">I chose the tar on my own. When I was 9 years old, I decided to play a folk instrument, and back then, I had chosen the kamancha. However, when I accidentally heard the sound of the tar, it touched me, and I immediately decided to learn to play it. Later, I found out that my great-grandfather was a very famous tar player in his time.<\/p><p data-start=\"828\" data-end=\"865\"><strong>&#8212; Do you remember your first tar?<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"867\" data-end=\"1092\">My first instrument was provided by the music school, as I didn\u2019t yet have my own. Later, when I was about to enter the professional field, my grandmother and grandfather gifted me a tar, which turned out to be 200 years old.<\/p><p data-start=\"1094\" data-end=\"1167\"><strong>&#8212; How did the idea of &#8220;Mikael Voskanian and Friends&#8221; band come about?<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"1169\" data-end=\"1551\">Initially, there was no specific plan to play jazz. I had a large number of compositions and friends. I decided to organize a concert featuring my compositions, where the tar would sound in a new, unexpected format for the audience. Together with my friends, who were jazz musicians, we organized the concert at the Gafeshtyan Art Center. Later, the project turned into a full band.<\/p><p data-start=\"1553\" data-end=\"1626\"><strong>&#8212; Why did you decide to bring the tar into this new style and format?<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"1628\" data-end=\"1948\">The way the instrument had been presented for centuries was great, and it needs to stay that way because it&#8217;s one of our values. But it also needs to be given a bit of a youthful touch. The instrument doesn&#8217;t become something else with that. I&#8217;m still playing the same tar, just in a way that many would like to hear it.<\/p><p data-start=\"1950\" data-end=\"1987\"><strong>&#8212; In which genres do you compose?<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"1989\" data-end=\"2252\">Different genres. If we take the songs, they are mostly close to folk music. Some songs, experts say, even have a touch of ashugh (traditional Armenian bard) style. Later, when I started composing more instrumental works, my creative thinking expanded a bit more.<\/p><p data-start=\"2254\" data-end=\"2322\"><strong>&#8212; How did you decide to participate in the Sevan Music Festival?<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"2324\" data-end=\"2593\">As for why I immediately decided to participate in the festival, I must say that I am partly from Sevan, and any event held there feels very close to my heart. Seeing the dedication and sincere expectations of the organizers also inspired me, so I decided to take part.<\/p><p data-start=\"2595\" data-end=\"2663\"><strong data-start=\"2595\" data-end=\"2663\">&#8212; How does the Sevan Music Festival differ from other festivals?<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"2665\" data-end=\"2860\">I believe that it will be a very positive, good, and musically enriching event that will contribute to the cultural life of the region and will be an alternative to the centralization in Yerevan.<\/p><hr data-start=\"2862\" data-end=\"2865\" \/><p
